Two On The Shore

The title is for Tischer and I being back on the shore of Lake Superior and stoked for adventure from our new home in Grand Marais, Minn. We are Two on The Shore.

You can find me at Lutsen Resort as their new Director of Activities & Recreation, a role that I am extremely excited about.

This winter is shaping up to be a busy one between some freelance writing opportunities, an adventure film to work on, and a stream skiing project I've undertaken with another buddy.

Also check out the kayak expedition I completed with a good friend in 2010 (www.superiordream.com).

If I Was A Gambling Man

If I was, I'd bet on Tischer and I showing up in Duluth come the beginning of October.  We'll have walked over 250 miles from the Canadian border, if all goes as planned, in 3 weeks.

However I am not.  I'd rather my money go toward a worthy cause, or something that I am guaranteed to see returns in-like beer.  Even so, only days away from departure, I am confident in our coming trip.

On trips like this, prep is a big deal and so I have spent this last week working out of my folks home in WBL.  My base camp is established-clothes strewn around my old bedroom, my kayak occupying the back yard, Tischer's dishes claiming the carpet by the deck door, and an assortment of running and skating gear sprinkled around the main floor, used socks and all.

Upstairs I have laid out my rations for this trip.  I have been researching camping sites and distances, plotting my position and destinations, arranging my caches, establishing a writing opportunity or two, and most of all-getting my fix of home cooking and family.  My brother joined us for dinner tonight around the table, just like it used to be so many years ago.  It will be different on trail, and I'm pumped for it, but it is warm and comforting here at mom and dad's right now.

Tomorrow I leave for Duluth.  Friday will be spent visiting with the folks at the SHT office and Granite Gear, finalizing my food situation, and making copies of my itinerary for people who need to know.  I'll also squeeze in a relaxed final skate along the Munger Trail before the race on Saturday morning.  Allegedly weather is calling for a warm and DRY head wind of 5-8mph's.  Head winds suck, but if the rain stays away, game on.

Send good energy my way.  I'll be out of touch for those 3 weeks following the NSIM, starting Sunday, September 14th.  Actually, send good energy towards Tischer, as I think living outside is going to be more of a shock to her after the last month or so than it is for me.
