Two On The Shore

The title is for Tischer and I being back on the shore of Lake Superior and stoked for adventure from our new home in Grand Marais, Minn. We are Two on The Shore.

You can find me at Lutsen Resort as their new Director of Activities & Recreation, a role that I am extremely excited about.

This winter is shaping up to be a busy one between some freelance writing opportunities, an adventure film to work on, and a stream skiing project I've undertaken with another buddy.

Also check out the kayak expedition I completed with a good friend in 2010 (www.superiordream.com).

Future stories

Since my last posts were for stories I wrote for Mount Hood Magazine, I thought I would comment briefly on the stories they have me working on for the next issue.  I have three that I am excited about, mainly because they challenge me in areas outside of my writing comfort zone.  More specifically, they deal with romantic dining and lodging options here on The Mountain.  Oh, and a winter love story.

Now, I don't mind sharing some good quality background details on me and my time here in the High Cascades.  I can count three places that I've eaten out at, and they are all in Govy.  Always a game is playing on a tv somewhere in the room and never has it been the context of a date, and so there has yet to be a romantic hint in the air.  The only places I have direct experience staying other than my cabin is the back of my truck or in my tent.

Now obviously the stories I write don't have to be my stories.  I know this.  But my general interest, when it comes to these topics, is drastically different than many others.  So where do I go and what approach do I take as a writer?

Do I hold true and riddle the ears of would-be readers with talk of white fuel and sleeping bags?  Or do I branch out and peak the interest of a readership I assume is more interested in cozy cabins with vehicle access and meals that include the word "course?"  Or perhaps I meet in the middle, and expose the world of zip together sleeping bags and short, moon-lit trails to the same cozy cabin in the woods?  I ask myself good questions.

If you have thoughts, or just want a good laugh, I welcome you to post a comment.  And stay tuned for the results.
